The American Bully and the American Pitbull Terrier are two popular dog breeds that are often confused with each other due to their similar appearance and history. However, there are distinct differences between these two breeds that set them apart. From their physical characteristics to their temperament and purpose, understanding these differences is essential for anyone considering owning one of these breeds. Let’s delve into the ultimate showdown between the American Bully and the Pitbull, unveiling the differences that make each breed unique.

Understanding the American Bully breed

The American Bully is a relatively new breed that originated in the United States. It was developed as a companion and family dog, combining the traits of several bully breeds, such as the American Pit bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, and Bulldog. The breed was created with the goal of producing a dog with a strong and muscular build, while also possessing a friendly and outgoing temperament. My American Bully, Kalypso, Kai for short, is the best companion dog I have ever had. I have had many breeds of dogs over the years and she is my far the most loving, friendly and outgoing dog I have had. The biggest fault that I have found in her temperament is that she can be clingy. Kali wants to be at my side every second of the day and when she is not then she is our “sofa hippo”

Physical Characteristics:

Size: The American Bully comes in several size variations, including Standard, Classic, Pocket, and XL. The breed can range from about 13 inches to over 23 inches in height at the shoulder. My Kali is a Classic American Bully. She is a solid 85 pound beauty.

Build: The American Bully has a solid and muscular build, with a broad chest and a powerful appearance. They have a compact and well-defined body structure, with strong bone structure and well-developed muscles.

Head: The breed is known for its distinctive head shape, featuring a broad and deep skull, strong jaws, and a well-defined stop. The muzzle is medium in length, and the cheeks are well-muscled.

Coat: American Bullies have a short, glossy coat that can come in a variety of colors and patterns. The coat is smooth and easy to maintain. My girl has the typical smooth glossy coat and that silly girl loves to have her coat vacuumed.

Temperament

American Bullies are known for their friendly and outgoing nature. They are highly sociable and enjoy the company of both humans and other animals.

- They are loyal and affectionate towards their family members, making them excellent family pets. Despite their intimidating appearance, they are generally not aggressive towards humans. Kali knows no strangers.

- American Bullies are often described as confident and eager to please. They are intelligent and trainable, making them suitable for various activities, including obedience training and agility.

- While they may exhibit protective instincts towards their family, proper socialization and training are essential to ensure a well-behaved and well-adjusted dog.

Purpose

- The American Bully was primarily bred to be a companion and family dog. They thrive on human interaction and make loyal and devoted pets. Kali does not do well alone. She definitely needs companionship.

- Some American Bullies may also excel in dog sports and competitions, such as weight pulling and obedience trials. Their strong and athletic build allows them to participate in various activities.

It is important to note that responsible ownership, training, and socialization are crucial for any dog breed, including the American Bully. Understanding the specific characteristics and needs of the breed will help ensure a happy and healthy relationship between the owner and their American Bully.

Living arrangements and exercise needs for American Bullies and APBTs

Living Arrangements:

Space Requirements: American Bullies and American Pit bull Terriers can adapt to various living environments as long as their space needs are met. However, it is ideal for them to have a yard or access to outdoor space where they can freely roam and play. If living in an apartment or a house without a yard, owners must compensate by providing ample exercise opportunities.

Climate Considerations: Both breeds are sensitive to extreme temperatures, whether hot or cold. It is crucial to provide appropriate shelter and ensure they have access to shade and fresh water during hot weather. In colder climates, they may require additional protection such as insulated dog houses or warm bedding.

Additionally, it is essential to comply with local ordinances and regulations related to dog ownership.

Exercise Needs:

 - Regular Physical Activity: American Bullies and APBT are energetic breeds that require regular exercise to maintain their physical and mental well-being. A daily routine of physical activities, such as walks, jogs, or playtime in a securely fenced yard, is essential. Engaging in interactive games or providing them with challenging toys can also help release their energy.

Mental Stimulation: In addition to physical exercise, these breeds benefit from mental stimulation activities. Engaging their minds through obedience training, puzzle toys, or interactive play can help prevent boredom and destructive behaviors.

Weight Management: Proper exercise is essential for weight management in both American Bullies and American Pitbull Terriers. Regular exercise can help burn calories and maintain a healthy body condition. However, it is important to avoid overexertion, especially during hot weather, to prevent heat-related illnesses.
