The Origins of St. Nicholas Day
The origins of St. Nicholas Day can be traced back to the fourth century, to a kind-hearted man named Nicholas. As a young man, he embarked on a pilgrimage to Palestine and Egypt with the primary goal of acquiring education from the esteemed Desert Fathers. After spending a considerable number of years there, he returned to his hometown of Myra, now known as Demre, situated on the shores of present-day Turkey. Without delay, he assumed the esteemed position of bishop in Myra.
Unfortunately, during the time of Diocletian persecution, the bishop was apprehended and held captive. However, his fortunes took a turn for the better when Constantine the Great rose to power, proclaiming Christianity as the official religion of the Roman Empire. Consequently, the bishop was liberated and given back his freedom. Bishop Nicholas died on December 6, 346. He was known for his generosity and his commitment to helping those in need. His reputation as a protector of children and the poor quickly spread throughout the region.
One popular tale highlighting the immense generosity of St. Nicholas recounts how he tossed sacks filled with gold into an open window of a destitute man's house. This act was intended to serve as a dowry for the man's daughters, who faced the unsettling prospect of being forced into a life of prostitution. Remarkably, the gold was said to have landed in the family's shoes, which were conveniently placed near the fire to dry. As a result, it has become a cherished tradition for children to leave their shoes outside the door or hang their stockings by the fireplace, hoping to receive a special gift on the eve of St. Nicholas' feast.
This act of kindness became the inspiration for the tradition of gift-giving on St. Nicholas Day. Today, children all over the world put out their shoes on the evening of December 5th, in anticipation of waking up to find treats, small gifts, and even chocolate Santas left by St. Nicholas.
